Martinis with McGovern

“Martinis with McGovern” is a heartwarming and insightful tale about an unexpected friendship between George McGovern, a 90-year-old former politician and humanitarian, and Heather, a 45-year-old woman who is about to lose her bid for Congress. The pair bonds over a “ passion for politics and a history of military service.

Through his nine decades of life, George faced a series of high-profile successes and devastating public defeats, including a historic loss in the race for president, followed by the loss of his long-held Senate seat. Despite those disappointments, George successfully built a quieter but perhaps more important legacy. His personal ambitions, however, cost his family dearly.

Heather, as she faced certain defeat in her second Congressional run, feels her dreams may have slipped away while she focused on marriage and motherhood. Had she built a life that wasn’t what she wanted, but rather just what she needed, and had she paid the price of that choice to spare her family?

Through standing martini dates, the two exchange stories and learn from each other's life lessons. George's triumphs and tragedies helped Heather realize that you can have it all, but you can’t have it all at the same time. Ultimately, this touching memoir calls the reader to reflect on their life choices, the legacy of their elders, and the universal truth that – in the end - everybody was somebody.
